Offshore Wind Farm

In 2018, global wind power capacity expanded 9.6% to 591 GW. In 2017, yearly wind energy production grew 17% reaching 4.4% of worldwide electric power usage, and providing 11.6% of the electricity in the European Union. Offshore wind power is a growing source of energy. At the end of 2017, the total worldwide offshore wind power capacity was 18.8 GW . Due to their high efficiency in comparison to onshore installations, offshore power stations are important and hence, the number of offshore power stations is increasing.

Fire can be a serious threat to the operation of an offshore power station since they are more difficult to access in case of fire. Furthermore, offshore turbines are bigger and more costly to install and repair and will incur much higher costs in the event of a fire incident

GCube, the largest provider of insurance to renewable energy schemes, reported in 2014  that the most common type of accident related to the wind turbines is blade failure and that the second most common causes of the accidents is fire.  A further GCube report in November 2015 stated that there are an average 50 wind turbine fires per year, and this remains unchanged in the latest 2018 GCube publication 

According to Caithness Windfarm Information Forum data, the annual number of incidents during 2014-2018 was 173 accidents per year. The total number of wind turbine accidents in 2019 (from the beginning of the year until April ) was 44.

Appropriate fire safety engineering is important and the water mist system can be one of the best solutions to protect the wind turbines and to save the life of the people that are working on the offshore facilities.
